Those who can shampoo hair and make baked beans on toast are no longer wanted by australia, and about time too.

In a bid to make students’ entry into Australia selective, the Australian government has announced a new Skilled Occupation List (SOL), which excludes some popular quick courses that Indians sign up for, like cookery, hairdressing and community welfare.

According to the Australian government, many of these courses “are popular among the Indian students because it offered an easy pathway to permanent residence in Australia upon completion of two years of studies in these fields”.

The new list, announced on Monday by immigration minister Chris Evans, has dashed the permanent residency hopes of hundreds of Indian students currently pursuing these courses there. The SOL list earlier covered 400 occupations; the revised one has less than half — merely 181 — most of them covering technical and highly-skilled courses. The move is likely to further cut down the number of those wanting to fly to Australia for a degree.
